Background

The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) is a stunning structure in the heart of Dublin City. Completed in 2010, it is a world-class, purpose-built, international conference and event venue. The CCD offers 22 multi-functional, flexible rooms for concerts, meetings, conferences and exhibitions from small corporate meetings to international congresses. The entire venue is finished to the highest specifications and incorporates the latest technology throughout.

Developed by Treasury Holdings, as part of a Public Private Partnership with The Office of Public Works (OPW), The CCD is the first state-owned, public-access building to be constructed since the foundation of the Irish State.

Designed by Pritzker award-winning Irish-born architect Kevin Roche, The CCD has quickly become a landmark building. Its stunning design includes a unique glass-fronted atrium running the full height of the building, which gives visitors panoramic views of the River Liffey, Dublin city centre and the Wicklow mountains.

It is also the world’s first carbon neutral convention centre, proof of the commitment of everyone involved to long-term environmental sustainability.

Solution

This incredible facility called for a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure to cater to all the demands of a modern international event location. DSS installed an end-to-end enterprise computing environment that encompasses everything from the desktop to the server room to core business applications. The CCD computing environment is based on best-in-class technology from HP, Microsoft, VMware and CommVault to create a sophisticated, reliable IT infrastructure that includes:

  • HP Servers and Storage
  • HP PDUs and UPS units
  • HP Storage Area Network
  • HP laptops, desktops and printers
  • Programme services
  • VMware servers, consoles and virtual machines
  • Microsoft Windows OS, SharePoint and Active Directory
  • Microsoft Exchange including Exchange Unified Messaging (UM) and
  • Office Communications Server (OCS)
  • Microsoft Threat Management Gateway
  • Microsoft Systems Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM)
  • Trend Micro Neatsuite Anti-Virus (AV) management server
  • CommVault Media Agent servers
Result

Having worked very closely with the client and their architects and with our partners in eircom, HP, Microsoft, Trend and Commvault, DSS designed and installed a truly state-of-the-art infrastructure for The CCD.

From unified communications for The CCD team working there every day to easy-to-use connectivity for presenters and delegates visiting the centre, intelligent design meets best-of-breed technology in this outstanding solution.

The flexible and reliable IT infrastructure helps keep the centre running efficiently every day of the year. With the full resources and back-up support from both DSS and the partners we worked closely with, there is complete peace of mind for The CCD team too.

'What a great project to be involved with,' Commented Richard Nolan, Managing Director of DSS. 'Here is a new landmark building that is the very epitome of advanced technology in everything from architectural design to sustainability and we had the opportunity to design and install an outstanding IT infrastructure that complimented all of this technological excellence. We are proud to say that the solution we installed will add to the overall wow-factor of The CCD.'

'DSS has done a remarkable job here,' says Michael O’Brien, Head of IT for The Convention Centre Dublin. 'From the design stage to the final handover, their engineers and technicians came up with some excellent suggestions and nothing was too much trouble for DSS. We have complete confidence in the IT systems we now have in place and this amazing facility can offer world-class IT services to its customers.'
