Eircom leverages Novell solution to Deliver Single Sign-on Solution

(15 Sep 2003)

Dublin, Ireland: 15th September 2003

Novell inc, the leading provider of information solutions, has announced that eircom has deployed a Single Sign-on (SSO) solution for its call centre employees to access network resources. The solution will integrate eircom's heterogeneous networks and reduce network administration costs by removing the need to enter multiple passwords to access and utilise the network (through multiple applications on the network). The solution is powered by Novell Nterprise (SecureLogin is a Nsure product) SecureLogin and Novell eDirectoryT. The contract for the implementation of this solution was awarded to DSS, Ireland's leading Novell Business Expert.

"eircom has over 800 employees in multiple location call centres who need to log in to up to 20 applications in any one day. Traditionally, each application needed to be individually logged in to using different user names and passwords, and typically took users 20 minutes to log in to all their required applications. This of course therefore also meant that this system had security implications with employees having to remember multiple passwords, consequently, a high proportion of help desk calls were from users requiring assistance in retrieving passwords. The installation of SSO has improved end-user productivity and significantly reduced IT costs by cutting out the need for multiple entries of different passwords and user names." said Paul Thornton, Distributed Technical Services Manager, eircom.
"With SecureLogin and eDirectory, Novell has provided us with a cost-effective solution that allows single password access to network information across multi-platforms, without comprising the authentication and authorisation controls that the existing multiple password policy offered," added Paul. "Staff need only sign on once, through Novell eDirectory, and then grants them access to all approved applications."

"Security and interoperability are key concerns among businesses today," said Kevin McAteer, Business Development Manager for Novell, Ireland. "eircom's decision to choose leading Novell solutions and an experienced partner to implement them, underlines our ability to help organisations address these concerns by delivering the technology solutions that not only enable bullet-proof security policies, but also bring disparate networks together to create a secure, one Net environment. Novell Secure Login will single sign-on enable Mainframe, Web enabled and 32-Bit Windows applications for eircom"
